Form builder — nine directions

The current builder shows every control of every field at once, in boxes nested three deep. Each variant below fixes that a different way. All nine keep the same design system and the same demo form (Call for Papers 2026). Click into a variant and try selecting fields and switching tabs — the core interaction of each one works.

Variants
V1

Inspector

Three panes: page outline on the left, a live preview of the submitter's form in the middle, and settings for the one selected field on the right. Nothing shows its controls until selected.

V2

Quiet rows

Keeps today's one-column layout, but each field collapses to a single clean row. Click a row and it expands into its editor — only one open at a time. Cheapest to build into the real app.

V3

Split preview

Editor rows on the left, the real public form on the right in a browser frame — always visible, always current. Selecting a row highlights that question in the preview.

V4

Stage

The builder is the form. You edit labels directly on the page the submitter sees, one page at a time. Field settings open in a popover; form settings live in a side drawer.

V5

Document

The builder reads like a document. Questions are blocks on one page; click a block for a small toolbar, press the plus for the insert menu. Form settings sit in a side drawer.

V6

Steps

A guided path: six steps from basics to publish, one screen at a time, with a progress rail and a final review summary. The most hand-holding of the set.

V7

Simple cards

Today's page, simplified. Each question is one row — label, type, required. Advanced settings fold away and show as plain sentence chips. The smallest change from the current app.

V8

Cards + inspector

V7's one-row cards inside V1's frame: outline rail left, full settings in a right-hand inspector.

V9

Combined

The winning parts of all eight: outline rail, one-row cards, an inspector that never repeats the row, and an honest on-demand preview.
